Information on House Bill 1893

What is House Bill 1893?
House bill 1893 (often referred to as HB1893) is a bill in the Texas Legislature that would
require any college or university in Texas to allow concealed weapons in classrooms.

Why is this bill bad? This bill will dramatically increase the number of guns in our colleges and Universities.
Proponents  claim that encouraging students to arm themselves will reduce incidents like the Virginia Tech
Massacre. In fact, the overwhelming evidence  is that wide spread availability of guns on campuses will
increase,
not decrease incidents like Virginia Tech. Alcohol consumption and suicide are both well known problems in
campus settings. We do not need to encourage guns into this environment.

Who is behind this bill? This bill is backed by the National Rifle Association (NRA). You can see their endorsement
at their web site by clicking

Why would the NRA want this bill passed? Although this bill only effects colleges and universities in Texas, it is part
of a broader agenda by the NRA to get guns in every college and university in the country. You can read about this
agenda in this excellent report by the Brady Center titled
No Gun Left Behind, The Gun Lobby's  Campaign to Push
Guns into Colleges and Schools

What can I do? If you live in Texas, you need to contact your representative and tell him or her that you oppose HB
1893. Tell your representative that you think a vote for HB1893 is a vote for violence in our schools and the death of
our children. The NRA is a powerful lobby group and our voices must be heard to bring sanity to this debate. You can
